Menopausal Symptoms May Be Linked to Infertility: What Does a New Study Say?

Menopausal Symptoms May Be Linked to Infertility

"Midlife women with a history of infertility may benefit from increased screening for depression.

"

A study published in the August 2023 Menopause Society found that women with a history of infertility were more likely to experience certain symptoms of menopause, such as trouble sleeping, irritability and mood swings.

The Big Point: A total of 36.6 percent of the study's 700 participants had a prior history of infertility and were more likely to experience difficulty sleeping, irritability, and depressive mood.

Why does it matter? A recent study can be used as a caution. Women who are in their midlife, going through any stage of menopause, can undergo a mental health screening to identify symptoms of depressive mood, after which necessary steps can be taken for care.

"This study shows an association between a history of infertility and increased depression and sleep symptoms in midlife. Midlife women with a history of infertility may benefit from increased screening for depression.

Big context: Depression and anxiety disorders have previously been associated with infertility and menopause. A study published in the Indian Journal of Clinical Psychiatry in July 2023 noted that anxiety problems were common among women going through menopause and suffering from depression.

Moreover, a 2022 study published in PubMed found that 58 percent of women with infertility reported depression and 24 percent reported anxiety.

However, this is the first study to find a link between infertility and menopausal symptoms.
